Arctic

Greenland, Ellesmere, the Bering Strait. Ice, polar bears, months above the tree line.

The Arctic is the second great test for expedition kayakers - colder than most of Antarctica in winter, but with a paradoxically warmer summer paddling window. Greenland's west coast has become a regular destination for serious paddlers; the high Arctic of Ellesmere and the Northwest Passage remains the preserve of multi-year, multi-team expeditions. Caffyn's 1989-91 Alaska solo and Turk & Boomer's 2011 Ellesmere circumnavigation are benchmarks here.
