In 1989 a British team - Robert Egelstaff, Trevor Potts, Greg Barton and Peter Clark - crossed the Bering Strait by kayak from Nome, Alaska to Uelen, Russia via the Diomede Islands. The crossing was described at the time as "The Everest of the Canoeing World" - a Cold War-era achievement that required navigating between the USA's Little Diomede and Russia's Big Diomede.
