One of the pleasures of running this website is hearing from people who know about expedition paddlers most of us have never come across. Baldvin Kristjansson, who's based in Iceland, wrote in to highlight two Danish and German paddlers whose Greenland work has flown under the wider community's radar.
John Andersen
John Andersen is a Danish paddler whose Greenland expeditions span decades. Some of his groundbreaking trips include long-distance solo paddles along the West Greenland coast and contributions to the wider European understanding of Arctic sea kayak technique. He has published books in Danish that have not been translated into English - one of the reasons his work is not as widely cited in the Anglophone kayak community as it deserves to be.
Arved Fuchs
Arved Fuchs is a German polar explorer whose career has crossed sea kayaking, sailing, and overland Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. He was the first person to reach both the North and South Poles on foot in the same year. His sailing vessel Dagmar Aaen has supported Greenland kayak expeditions and Arctic research voyages.
