Risk Assessment for Expedition Kayaking
How serious paddlers think about hazard, exposure, and decision-making before and during an expedition.
The risk framework
Expedition kayaking accepts inherent danger. The skill is not eliminating risk but understanding it. Risk = probability × consequence. Most paddler deaths come not from low-probability catastrophe but from medium-probability hazards that the paddler underestimated.
The big risks
Cold-water immersion is the highest-consequence risk for most temperate-climate trips. Hypothermia kills fast and impairs the decision-making needed to recover. After cold water: separation from kayak (drift, swim incapacity), weather-window misreading (long crossings caught by deteriorating conditions), shipping channels (you are invisible at radar height), medical events ashore (broken ankle on remote coast).
Pre-trip risk register
A practical risk register lists hazards, probability, consequence, and your mitigation. For each item: who carries what equipment, who has the relevant skill, what's the abort criterion. Walk through this honestly before launch. If a partner can't answer a hazard mitigation question, that's a learning opportunity for the pre-trip phase, not the trip itself.
In-trip judgement
Once on the water, risk assessment is a daily morning ritual: weather, sea state, paddler condition, supplies, distance to next safe ground. The skill is honest assessment of your own state. Tired paddlers make worse decisions. Hungry paddlers make worse decisions. Fatigue compounds. Build in rest days.
The abort decision
The willingness to abort is the single best predictor of safe expedition outcomes. Every successful long-distance expedition has involved multiple decisions to wait, to portage, to return to shore, to abandon a leg. Treat abort as success - the expedition continues; only that day's plan ended.
