Why cold water kills, what happens to your body, and the actual decisions that keep you alive after immersion.
Why cold water is worse than cold air
Cold water draws heat from the body 25 times faster than cold air at the same temperature. A 10°C sea is genuinely life-threatening. Most cold-water deaths happen not from hypothermia in the long term but from cold shock in the first minute of immersion - involuntary gasp reflex, panic, drowning before hypothermia ever sets in.
The 1-10-1 rule
1 minute to control your breathing. 10 minutes of meaningful movement (re-entry, swim to shore if close, climb back on kayak). 1 hour before hypothermia incapacitates you. Plan rescues to fit within those windows.
Drysuit, wetsuit, semi-dry
For water below 12°C, drysuit with appropriate base layers is standard. Wetsuits work for short exposures and warmer water. Semi-dry suits are a compromise. Whichever you choose, get in the water at home in your kit before relying on it on a trip - many paddlers discover their cold-water kit isn't as warm as they assumed.
Re-entry technique
Practise wet re-entry until reliable. Eskimo roll is the cleanest. Cowboy scramble works for some kayaks. Re-entry and roll is the universal fallback. Solo paddlers must have a workable re-entry method - the partner option doesn't exist.
The shore decision
If you can be ashore in under 30 minutes paddling, that's almost always the right answer when conditions deteriorate. The expedition is not the day; the expedition is the multi-week journey. Sit out a bad day on shore and you continue tomorrow.
