Geoffrey Hunter was the first to document an attempt to circumnavigate the mainland of Great Britain by kayak. He used a home-made wooden sea kayak. He was forced to cut short via the Crinan and Caledonian Canals and nearly died when shipwrecked in the Solway Firth. The journey opened the way for the Caffyn/Dennis full circumnavigation in 1980 and the subsequent UK expedition tradition.
